Photo Exhibit: “New Perspectives: Dominican Republic” to open at the University of Rhode Island Providence Campus this Fall in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month

New York, 08/25/2011

Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) & Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) will host their ninth photo exhibit entitled New Perspectives: Dominican Republic, in collaboration with the Urban Arts & Cultural Program of the University of Rhode Island Providence Campus. The official dates of the Exhibit will be September 12 through October 31, 2011 which coincides with Rhode Island’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday September 15th from 5:00 P.M.to 9:00 P.M. in the URI Providence Campus 1st & 2nd floor Lobby Gallery, 80 Washington St., Providence RI 02903 with a Special Gala Reception on October 20th form 5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.. The extensive exhibit, which will span both floors of the gallery, will highlight a selection of 58 aerial images from the Dominican Republic and will be accessible to both students and the general public. Since it opened in 2008, this extremely popular & successful photo exhibit has been viewed by tens of thousands of people and has given the public the chance to learn more about the Dominican Republic and all it has to offer.

The exhibit was inspired by the book of the same name, New Perspectives: Dominican Republic. Featuring an array of original aerial photographs by Dominican based photographer Anne Casale, of landscapes, people and situations that go far beyond the typical images associated with the country, the book shows the Dominican Republic as it has never been seen before. The Photo Book and Exhibit both form part of the Foundations’ overall goal to promote the Dominican Republic, disseminate information about the country, and strengthen appreciation of the country’s history, culture, ecology and contemporary life.

GFDD and FUNGLODE, the institutions that promoted the creation of the book, under the direction of its Editor-In-Chief, Natasha Despotovic, felt the need to share this experience with Rhode Island’s sizeable Dominican and Latino community. The exhibit also provides an invaluable opportunity to gather students and neighbors around this unique educational experience designed to broaden their vision, perception and national pride of a country that presents an infinite array of landscapes and evokes the same amount of emotions.

Both the book New Perspectives: Dominican Republic and the photo exhibit are projects of GFDD and FUNGLODE, non- profits registered in the U.S. and the Dominican Republic, with the purpose of contributing to the social, economic and democratic development of the Dominican Republic. Both organizations were created, and are inspired by the vision of President Leonel Fernández, whom also serves as the Honorary President of each institution.
